Elementary Art ProgramThe Art program is organized to include a wide variety of projects that range in mediums and build upon previously acquired skills. The vocabulary of art (elements of art and principles of design) is used from the very first art experiences in Kindergarten, gradually increasing in complexity and application, as students move through the Art program. The Art program includes skill development in drawing and sketching, painting, printmaking, and ceramics. Each of these mediums are introduced and revisited multiple times within the five year elementary art experience, strengthening each student’s understanding and facility in each medium. For example, basic printing of found objects, such as leaves, are introduced in Kindergarten during the fall season. In First and Second Grade, students will take a nature walk to collect their own leaves to print. In Third Grade, after collecting and printing their leaves, students use their leaf prints to create an Autumn Book, which they read aloud to their class. In each of these projects, the Elements of Art, such as color, shape and texture, are identified and used in the finished products.
